Rick got home after four in the morning. He didn’t want to leave Jill, but when she fell asleep he knew he’d better go. She’d throw a fit if he stayed the night. If he ever did stay, he’d make damn sure she wouldn’t regret it the next morning.

Besides, he needed to talk with Tuck before he took off. Rick walked into the small apartment and found his friend seated at the table writing something on a pad of paper.

“I was wonderin’ if you were going to make it in. So you get everything straightened out with Jill?”

“Not really. But she’s not throwing things at me.” Rick glanced away. “I’ve hurt her, Tuck.”

His friend watched him quietly. “Never known you to worry so much about a woman before.”

“Jill’s different,” Rick said. “She doesn’t know how to play the game.” Yet, it was her very innocence he found appealing, he realised.

“Then why aren’t you running the other way?”

“I’ve been trying.”

Tuck stood. “Then the only advice I have to give you is take it slow and easy. At least while I’m gone.” He went to the sofa and grabbed his duffel bag. “You’ve got my cell-phone number. Call if you need me and I’ll give you a ring when I get things going at the drilling site.” He paused and looked Rick directly in the eye. “Your family has no idea what you’re really worth, do they?”

Rick shook his head.

“That would be between you and your family, then.”

“Thanks, buddy, I appreciate everything you’re doing.”

“I’m doing exactly what I love to do,” Tuck said, “and that’s making money. In fact, I’m thinking I might branch out and look into other business ventures, like Covelli Enterprises. Might be a place to sink some of your money.”

“Covelli Enterprises?”

“I guess you missed that discussion. Last night after you left, Tony, Rafe and Angelina were sitting up talking about forming another corporation. Covelli Enterprises was the name they picked and Tony is heading it.”

Rick was a little hurt that he wasn’t around for this latest discussion. But why should his family wait for him? He hadn’t been there for any other planning sessions, so why should it matter now? He looked at his friend. “So you’re going to invest in this town?”

“Maybe. Tony’s gonna send me more info after he talks to a couple of banks. I’ll only be gone a few weeks, maybe a little longer. Think you can stay out of trouble until I return?”

“I’m going to try. All I’ve been doing is work.”

Tuck slapped Rick on the back. “Look, you and Jill will straighten things out. And if it’s meant to be between you two, it’ll happen.”

“Nothing is going to happen, Tuck. In a few more weeks, after this mess with Papa is straightened out, I’ll be heading back to Texas. There can’t be anything long-term between Jill and me.”

“If you say so.” Tuck headed for the door, then stopped and walked back to the small table in the kitchen. “I nearly forgot this.” He picked up the corna rossa, the red-ribbon-wrapped wishbone.
